Linda Mary Jones Fine Art

I live and work in St Austell, Cornwall. I grew up in Kent and have also spent periods living and working in Canada, Scotland and Texas. As a painter, I use a variety of media with different supports but mainly work with oil on canvas, paper or wood. I have been fascinated by drawing and painting since childhood and always loved images involving people. Last year two of my paintings were exhibited at The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2011. Entitled Trail and Trust, they are shown on this page. I was also short-listed for the 2011 National Open Art Competition at Chichester with my painting, Figure Out, also shown on this page. Many of my paintings I would describe as ‘occupied landscapes’, inhabited by figures which may be distant or obscured but are the subject of the painting. I often work from my local environment, such as the trails which explore the rural and old industrial areas of St Austell, the local town park or the harbour at Charlestown. Other paintings are based on involvement with my family and the fascinating world of infants and children. The landscape occupied by small children is an intriguing place.

Human interest lies at the heart of my work. Inspiration comes from observation; an apparently insignificant moment captures me and feels like a revelation – an insight. We are physically small within our landscapes but we are so involved in what we are doing – in our part of it - and I like to reflect these two aspects. My interpretations may suggest a narrative but I will often allow the painting to lead me. I love the way paintings can evolve. I enjoy the texture of paint and surface and aim to create images which appear sensual, not literal.
